Yarn Materials
For your first projects, the material of the yarn does not really matter because you are still getting used to working. I recommend starting with acrylic regardless of the project type because it is the cheapest and not hard to work with. For projects that need to absorb moisture, like towels and coasters, cotton is the best affordable choice. For most garments you will want to use a blend of wool and cotton.
Hooks
Metal hooks are the most durable, but if they aren’t well made they can have imperfect surfaces that create more friction and slow down your work. Plastic hooks are typically the smoothest but break easily compared to other materials. Wood is more durable than plastic and is less affected by the durability issue, but wood hooks are harder to find and expensive.
Accessories
Other tools for crochet include stitch markers, yarn shears, large-eye needles, and row counters. Stitch markers are super helpful for marking the start of rows, keeping your working loop from slipping out when you are not working, and much more; they are probably the most important tool other than the hook. You will also want large eye needles for weaving in your rows, and a pair of dedicated yarn scissors.
