Scarves & Blankets
For both knit and crochet, a scarf is a classic first project for good reason. Scarves are usually worked in straight rows, and the stitches can be as varied as you would like. Scarves are also a great opportunity to practice freestyling your favorite stitches! Just chain a good width for a scarf, and work away. Alternatively, if you want a larger undertaking the same principles apply to working blankets in straight rows!
Stuffed Animal/Amigurumi
Amigurumi is a style of crochet that originates in Japan, focusing on 3D style plushies using basic stitches (usually only SC, INC, DEC). They are a really rewarding first project if you are up for the challenge. For stuffies, usually a plush acrylic yarn is the best choice. Most patterns will ask you to use safety eyes, but you can sew on facial features with black yarn instead if you don’t want to buy more supplies.
Coasters and Squares
If you are looking for a low commitment project that you can complete quickly and with cheap materials, coasters are a great place to start. Coasters are usually worked as squares or circles, so they can be worked in either straight rows or the round. As mentioned on the supplies page, cotton is usually the best material for coasters since it has high absorbency; however, acrylic is inexpensive and fine to use.
